Benedict to be inducted into broadcasting hall

UPDATE (May 7, 2017): Jack Benedict, Renda Broadcasting Sports Director and long-time Voice of IUP football and basketball, was inducted into the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame on Sunday in Hershey.

The ceremony took place at the 2017 PAB Annual Convention and Gold Medal Dinner at the Hotel Hershey.

Jack Benedict, the sports director at Renda Broadcasting in Indiana, has been chosen to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Benedict will be inducted at the PAB Convention at Hotel Hershey in May. He is about to conclude his 55th year in broadcasting.

Benedict was born and raised in Mount Pleasant in neighboring Westmoreland County. He began his legendary radio career in June 1962 at WCVI-AM 1340 in Connellsville. He came to Indiana County and 1450 WDAD-AM in 1969 as the morning host and sports director and broadcast his first IUP football and basketball, Indiana High School football and basketball as well as selected Indiana County high school football and basketball games.

In April 1989, he moved on to AM-1160 WCCS and RayMark Broadcasting after the station gained the rights to IUP Sports. In 2004, when the four commercially licensed stations were purchased by the St. Pier Group, Benedict became the sports director for all four stations. He currently airs eight sportscasts weekday mornings between 6 and 10 a.m. on 1160 and 101.1 FM as well as AM-1450 WDAD and 100.3 FM.

His real love has been as the "Voice of IUP Sports," which airs on WQMU-FM 92.5. On Saturday, Sept. 17, he broadcast his 500th IUP football game. Two weeks later, before signing on to his pregame show, IUP and Renda Broadcasting honored Benedict prior to him the first home game of the season. He has called 510 IUP football games and is approaching 2,000 men's women's basketball games.
