INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP Athletic Department joins the Indiana community in mourning the passing of Larry Judge, who worked at the school in several capacities for more than 30 years.
"Larry had incredible passion and engagement with the university throughout his life -- as a student, as an alumnus, as an employee, and as a retiree," IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll said.
"He served this university in many roles; including serving as
IUP's first full-time sports information director. Through all of his health challenges after his retirement, he was faithful to IUP and to IUP athletics. Larry loved this university, and we loved him. We will miss him."
Judge passed away suddenly Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Indiana Regional Medical Center. He was 75. Judge was married to the former Elaine Reschini since 1968 and was father to Lisa Marie Judge.
"I have known Larry for almost 50 years," Renda Broadcasting sports director Jack Benedict said. "We were both from Westmoreland County - he from Norwin and me from Mount Pleasant. We shared many stories together. I have known only two people in my life, the late Bill Betts and Larry, who NEVER had a bad word to say about anybody else. He truly was a gentleman and a gentle man. I will miss talking with him in the neighborhood."
Judge graduated from Indiana State College in 1964, later returning to his alma mater as the assistant director of public relations and sports information director in 1966. He held that position for three years before taking a role at Westminster College.
He returned to IUP in 1972 as the school's first full-time director of alumni affairs. In 1979, he moved to full-time sports information director, a role he served for 17 years until 1996. He then became the university's coordinator of special projects, working with the newly formed IUP Athletic Hall of Fame, and serving as the associate sports information director, until his retirement in 2002.
"It is a very sad day for IUP Athletics and our entire University Community," former IUP Athletic Director Dr. Frank Condino said.
"Larry had a strong sense for the history and traditions of IUP and was still a vital cog in the conduct of the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame. He had an influence on our Athletic Department for over four decades and his passing will create significant void that will be difficult to fill."
Judge was honored by the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame with its honorary Bell Ringer Award in 2009 and was inducted into the Norwin (High School) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
Relations and friends are invited to gather Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church for visitation from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kathy Mihoerck. Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana is entrusted with final arrangements, including a private inurnment at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6, Indiana, PA 15701. Online condolences may be made to
