EDINBORO, Pa. – The IUP women's soccer team (7-5-1, 5-5-1) fell to the Edinboro Fighting Scots 4-1 this afternoon in the first of their two games this weekend.
The Fighting Scots got out to an early lead in the sixth minute of the match when forward Danielle Chatten took advantage of a missed clearance by the IUP defense to open the scoring for Edinboro. Despite the early setback the Crimson Hawks remained undeterred and battled back to regain equal footing in the match thanks to
Nikki Bowman's goal in the twenty-fifth minute. A long IUP free kick from
Hannah Stoof was allowed to bounce in the Edinboro eighteen-yard box, and Bowman took advantage of the opportunity to get a piece of the kick and push it past the Fighting Scots goalkeeper.
The two teams would not be even for long though, as a mere five minutes later Edinboro would retake the lead thanks to a Brittnie Spithaler goal. While IUP would go on to outshoot Edinboro nine to eight in the first half, as well as win five corners to the Fighting Scots two, the Crimson Hawks were unable to tie the game for a second time and went into the halftime break down by a goal.
The Crimson Hawks started the second half on the hunt for an equalizing goal but were dealt a major setback in their quest to get level in the 56
th minute when a long-range free kick from the Fighting Scots beat IUP goalkeeper
Madeline Smakulski to double the home team's lead. That goal further invigorated the Fighting Scots who proceeded to rack up several shots on the IUP net in the minutes following their score. That pressure would pay off in the 73th minute when the home team was able to pick up a fourth goal to put the game out of reach for IUP and condemn the Crimson Hawks to defeat.
