Crimson Hawks downed by Bald Eagles

INDIANA, Pa. - Despite a strong offensive effort which saw the IUP women's soccer team (7-7-1, 5-7-1 PSAC) register 12 shots and earn 6 corner kicks this afternoon the Crimson Hawks were shutout for the second consecutive game, falling to Lock Haven by a thee goal margin.

On a blustery day at the South Campus Fields the Crimson Hawks went into Wednesday's match needing a win to boost their chances for a spot in the PSAC playoffs, and for much of the first half played with an urgency and tenacity that put the visitors on their heels. While the Crimson Hawks carried more of the play in the first period, and looked like the team most likely to open the scoring, they were struck with a sucker punch literally seconds before the halftime whistle was about to blow. With a mere 10 seconds left in the first half Lock Haven was awarded a penalty kick following a foul on one of the Bald Eagle forwards in the IUP box. Lock Haven forward Marah Foltz stepped up to take the spot kick for the Bald Eagles and sent IUP goalkeeper Maria Tunney the wrong way to give her side the lead.

IUP continued to dominate the game in the second half but once again were struck by a goal against the run of play in the 70th minute when Foltz grabbed her second score of the game following a rapid Lock Haven counter-attack.

The Bald Eagles were able to nab a third goal of the match just four minutes later thanks to some opportunistic forward play. Junior Haleigh Swam took advantage of a short IUP clearance to chip Tunney from 25 yards out and give Lock Haven a 3-0 lead.

While the IUP offense would muster several more shots and chances in the remaining minutes of the game none of their efforts were able to beat Bree Hilty in the Lock Haven net, ensuing that the Crimson Hawks would end the day empty-handed.
