IUP defeated in season finale

LEECHBURG, Pa. - The IUP women's soccer team (9-8-1, 7-8-1 PSAC) lost to West Chester 4-0 on Sunday after being forced to replay a match that was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was terminated at halftime due to unplayable field conditions at the South Campus Field.

While the Crimson Hawks had been leading the Golden Rams 3-0 when Saturday's match had to be abandoned, due to NCAA regulations because the game had not reached the 70th minute and could not be completed on the same day, the teams teams were forced to replay the entire match from the start on Sunday.

Those who were in attendance for both matches might have experienced a slight sense of de ja vu during the opening stages of Sunday's game, as the opening of the replayed match started in a very similar pattern to that of the first game between the teams, with the Golden Rams controlling much of the possession without really threatening the IUP goal. Unfortunately, while the Crimson Hawks were able to strike first on Saturday, it was West Chester who got on the scoreboard first this time around.

Olivia Muha opened the scoring for West Chester in the 27th minute, heading a long pass against the IUP goal post before tucking home her own rebound to give the Golden Rams the lead. Madison Baxter would then double that lead for West Chester in the 34th minute sending a long range strike over the head of Madeline Smakulski in a the IUP net.

After only being able to muster a single shot on goal in the first half, the Crimson Hawks ratcheted up the offensive pressure in the second period racking up 10 shots on the West Chester goal in an effort to back on level terms.

Despite the attacking onslaught, the Crimson Hawks were unable to break down the Golden Rams defense and West Chester would add to their lead in 55th minute before adding a fourth and final tally late in the match.
