Strong defense helps No. 3 IUP Women’s Hoops double-up Shippensburg, 66-32

INDIANA, Pa. – Senior guard Carolyn Appleby scored a game-high 22 points and added four steals to lead the third-ranked Crimson Hawks to a 66-32 win over visiting Shippensburg Saturday night at the Memorial Field House.

She also led a defensive effort that forced Shippensburg into 27 turnovers and a 25 percent shooting percentage as IUP remained undefeated with an 8-0 overall record, including a 3-0 mark in conference play.

The Crimson Hawks took control of the game early on, using a 8-0 run between the first and second quarters to take a 20-9 lead on a fastbreak layup by Appleby.

IUP's advantage escalated quickly in the quarter, using runs of 7-0 and 14-2 to take a 41-16 lead into halftime. Appleby was the main offensive cog during those runs, scoring 13 second quarter points as she went into the break with 18.

It was the sixth time this year the Crimson Hawks didn't allow an opponent to break 20 points in the first 20 minutes of play.

IUP's production slowed down in the second half, but its defense did not. The Crimson Hawks allowed just five points in the third quarter and forced 12 second half turnovers to completely shut down any thoughts of a Shippensburg comeback.

Nine different IUP players recorded a steal, with Appleby and senior forward Brittany Robinson each swiping four. Junior forward Lexi Griggs added three.

Griggs was the only other IUP player to score in double-figures with 10 points. Junior guard Natalie Myers grabbed 10 rebounds.
