PEMBROKE, N.C. – Nine Crimson Hawks combined for 14 hits, including four home runs, but IUP baseball dropped a 16-12 nine inning ballgame to 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon.
IUP grabbed an early 5-1 lead, but Pembroke's big bats answered by scoring 15 runs between the third and seventh innings and held on to sweep the three-game weekend set and remain undefeated.
A two-run homer by
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler), IUP's first of the day, helped the Crimson Hawks score five in the second inning as they took that early lead.
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York),
Nate Dickey (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and
Ted DeSanti (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) – the fifth, sixth and seventh hitters in the IUP lineup – combined to go 7-for-15 with two homers, three runs batted in, and five runs scored. Dickey and DeSanti homered back-to-back in the seventh inning, part of a three-run stanza as the Crimson Hawks tied the score at 11-11.
Pembroke (6-0) responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to go on top 16-11, only giving up a solo homer to
Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) the rest of the way.
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) continued his hot-hitting weekend by going 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored at the leadoff spot.
Mike Klingensmith (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) got the start on the mound and was one of five IUP pitchers to see time.
