IUP Men’s Basketball edges Seton Hill 65-64 in regular season finale

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Forward Willem Brandwijk (Voorburg, The Netherlands/Holderness School (NH)) hit a free throw with 2.5 seconds left as IUP men's basketball held on for a 65-64 win at Seton Hill Saturday afternoon.

Brandwijk went to the line after being fouled while grabbing a rebound with the game tied in the closing seconds. He made his first attempt but his second bounced off the rim and into the hands of a Seton Hill player, but the Griffins were unable to get a shot off as time expired.

Forward Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) scored 13 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and dished out six assists to lead the way as the Crimson Hawks wrapped up their regular season with a 22-7 overall record. The division winners went 18-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Guard Anthony Glover, Jr. (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) scored a game-high 21 points, going 8-of-17 from the field, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range. His afternoon ended prematurely, however, as he was ejected with 5:59 to go after recording his second technical foul of the game.

It was one of a combined six technical fouls from both teams in the final eight minutes, including four handed out when Glover picked up his second.

Unfortunately, Glover's second half ejection means that he will be ineligible to compete in the Crimson Hawks' PSAC quarterfinal matchup next week. IUP will host the winner of the first round Edinboro/Pitt-Johnstown match Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The late game disorder effected the final six minutes of action, as Seton Hill (10-18, 6-16 PSAC) used a 9-0 run to tie things up at 60-60 with 4:00 to play.

The Crimson Hawks did not allow Seton Hill to grab the lead, as buckets by Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) and Diaz made it a 64-62 IUP game with less than two minutes to go. Seton Hill tied things up with a tip-in by Spencer Casson with 1:24 to go, and missed a go-ahead layup with 48 seconds left to play.

On IUP's next possession, a jumper by Malik Miller (Farrell, Pa./Farrell) bounced off the rim but Brandwijk collected the offensive board to give the Crimson Hawks another chance. Lombardi then had a long 3-point attempt bounce off, and again Brandwijk was there to collect the rebound before the foul.

Brandwijk finished with eight points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes.

The Crimson Hawks shot 37 percent from the field, but made 11 3-pointers and forced Seton Hill into 17 turnovers. Seton Hill shot 50 percent on the day, with Casson finishing with 10 points, 15 rebounds, six blocks and four steals.
