PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Junior
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored six goals and junior
Lauren Robinson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck High) dished out seven assists to lead the 19th-ranked IUP women's lacrosse team to a 19-5 win over Alderson Broaddus in the Crimson Hawks 2018 season opener Monday.
The six goals are the second most in a single game for Burrows, who netted that many twice in a game last year.
The seven assists are a career-high for Robinson and the most by an IUP player since former All-American
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) dished out seven assists March 18, 2015.
Even with their consistent success over the last eight years, this is the first time since 2013 that the Crimson Hawks opened up a season with a victory. The 19 goals is the most for IUP since scoring 24 against Shippensburg on April 18, 2014.
And it could have been even more than 19 goals, but the game was stopped prematurely after the stadium lights in Philippi shut off with four minutes to play. With the game well in hand, the game was called.
The Crimson Hawks scored the game's first 10 goals to make it a running clock less than 11 minutes into the contest. Six different players scored during the early 10-0 run, including four by Burrows and two by
Riley Greenleaf (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield). Robinson tallied five of her assists in the first 10:28 of action.
Alderson Broaddus (1-1) finally got on the board midway through the first half and added another goal before the break, but the Crimson Hawks took a 14-2 lead into halftime.
Making her first career start in the net, freshman goalie
Lauren Piecknick (Upper Saint Clair, PA/Upper Saint Clair) finished with six saves and three ground balls.
In addition to Burrows, four other Crimson Hawks scored multiple goals. Greenleaf finished with three, as did
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point).
Kelly Shields (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) scored two goals and had two assists.
Closing in
IUP head coach
Mindy Richmond was her 97th career game Monday, inching closer to the 100-win milestone. She is 97-61 (.614) in 10 seasons.
