No. 13 IUP Women’s Basketball defeats Gannon in 13th annual Komen Game

INDIANA, Pa. — Senior guard Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) scored a game-high 17 points, helping IUP women's basketball defeat Gannon 60-45 Saturday night during the 13th annual Komen Game.

Smith went 7-of-14 from the field and 2-of-7 from 3-point range, adding three assists and three boards during her 31 minutes of work. Smith has scored in double-figures 17 times in 21 games this season.

Other standouts for the Crimson Hawks were junior guard Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) and sophomore forward Maura D'Anna (Springfield, Va./West Springfield). Appleby posted 10 points, five assists and four rebounds. This is the eighth game in a row that Appleby has scored in double-figures.

D'Anna came off the bench, scoring 11 points and grabbing six rebounds. D'Anna went near perfect in shooting, going 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from the foul line.

IUP improved to 19-2 overall and 14-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with the win against the Golden Knights (13-9, 10-6).

The Crimson Hawks started strong, grabbing the lead 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a struggle back and forth, as IUP led by only one point at halftime. IUP started the second half with a 9-0 scoring run, maintaining the lead for the rest of the game.

The Crimson Hawks outshot the Golden Knights from the field 45 percent to 22 percent in the second half, going 23-of-47 overall from the field, 4-of-11 from 3-point range and 10-of-13 from the foul line.

IUP held one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the PSAC to shooting 26 percent overall from 3-point range. The Golden Knights average 7.3 3-pointers per game, only converting four tonight against the Crimson Hawks.

IUP head coach Tom McConnell is 7-3 all-time against Gannon, with those seven wins coming in the last eight meetings.
