CLARION, Pa. – Pitchers
Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) and
Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) combined to give up just two runs on seven hits to help the IUP softball team to wins of 2-0 and 9-2 for a doubleheader sweep at Clarion Saturday.
Zola tossed a complete game shutout in game one and was credited with the victory in game two as the Crimson Hawks improved to 10-10 overall and 4-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division.
Zola finished with 11 strikeouts in 10.0 innings pitched, giving up just five hits and two earned runs on the day. It was her first shutout of the season while the nine strikeouts in the opener were a season-high.
Risinger went the final four innings in relief of Zola in game two, striking out three batters while allowing two hits to earn her first save of the season.
In the opener, the Crimson Hawks got all the runs they needed in the first inning with an RBI double by
Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) and a run-scoring groundout from
Renee Wall (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights). Zola tossed 1-2-3 innings in the first, fifth and seventh innings as she was strong throughout.
In game two, most of the scoring came in the first two innings as the Crimson Hawks took a 6-2 lead.
Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) and
Bryanna Lonick (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) had RBI hits in the first inning, while Beers and Wall drove in the second inning runs.
IUP added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double by
Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) and took a 9-2 lead in the sixth with a run-scoring single by
Alaina Laverick (Clymer, Pa./Penns Manor).
Nine different Crimson Hawks combined for 15 hits in game two.
Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) went 3-for-4, with Beers, Parrish, Lonick, and
Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) all tallying two apiece. Lonick and Wall each hit doubles, with Wall and Little both driving in a pair of runs.

The Crimson Hawks have a big week lined up with four doubleheaders in five days – all at home. It all starts Tuesday afternoon with a pair against Seton Hill at 2:30 p.m.
