CHARLESTON, W.Va. – For the third time this week, the IUP women's tennis scored a 9-0 victory with a dominant victory at Charleston Saturday afternoon at Coonskin Park.
The shutout victory was the eighth of the season for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 16-5 overall. It was a matchup between two of the top teams in the NCAA's Atlantic Region rankings, as IUP holds onto the No. 1 spot while Charleston entered the weekend at No. 4.
RESULTS
The Crimson Hawks now have two wins over the top competition in the Atlantic Region in the last two days.
Julia Newman (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Girls' College) and
Mariana Valenzuela (Bogotá, Colombia/George Berkeley School) opened up the match with an 8-2 win at the third doubles spot. Two tougher wins followed, with
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) winning 8-5 at one, while
Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) and
Nicole Beidacki (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Colegio Sao Judas Tadeu) won 9-7 (7-4) at two.
Singles wins were credited to Petercakova at one, von Agris at two, Minchenkova at three, Beidacki at four, Newman at five, and Valenzuela at six.
Von Agris extended her streak to 11 straight singles and five straight doubles victories Saturday. She's a combined 51-11 (.823), and is looking to break her own single season school record of 52 wins this weekend.
