Crimson Hawks finish regular season with 8-1 win at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – IUP women's tennis wrapped up a successful weekend – and regular season – with a convincing 8-1 victory over West Virginia State Sunday.

The Crimson Hawks took down the next three top-ranked teams in the NCAA Atlantic Region this weekend, with West Virginia State the No. 2. IUP defeated No. 3 Mercyhurst (7-2) Friday and No. 4 Charleston (9-0) Saturday.

RESULTS

The win was IUP's 11th straight over West Virginia State since the 2010-11 season.

IUP ends its regular season with a 17-5 overall record, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division, and the top seed in next week's conference tournament.

The biggest victory for the Crimson Hawks came at the top doubles spot, as Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) defeated Kiersten Hensley and Nina Dillwald by a score of 8-6. Hensley and Dillwald entered the match as the 24th-ranked doubles team in Division II.

Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) and Nicole Biedacki at two (8-1) and Julia Newman (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Girls' College) and Mariana Valenzuela (Bogotá, Colombia/George Berkeley School) at three (8-2) gave IUP a 3-0 lead after doubles play.

Petercakova earned the Crimson Hawks' top singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Laura Isbey at one. Minchenkova (three), Beidacki (four), Newman (five), and Valenzuela (six) all scored wins.
