INDIANA, Pa. – It was another shutout victory for the IUP women's tennis team, as the Crimson Hawks defeated Clarion 9-0 Monday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts on campus.
It's the fifth straight shutout victory for IUP, the longest streak for the program since posting five straight 9-0 wins in 2013.
RESULTS
The Crimson Hawks improved to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with the victory. Clarion fell to 4-6 and 0-2.
Not only did IUP remain undefeated in the division as a team, but the players improved to a combined 27-0 in PSAC West matches.
Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) improved her personal win streak to a team-best eight straight singles matches with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the third spot. She's also won six straight doubles matches, pairing with
Maria Magraner Grau (Valencia, Spain/IES Jaume II el Just) for an 8-1 victory at three.
The trio of
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium),
Julia Newman (Tauranga, New Zealand/Tauranga Girls' College) and
Mariana Valenzuela (Bogotá, Colombia/George Berkeley School) all improved their singles win streaks to six with Monday victories. Petercakova won 6-0, 6-0 at one, Newman 6-0, 6-0 at four, and Valenzuela 6-1, 6-0 at five.
Petercakova and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) extended their singles win streak to six with their 8-0 victory at one.
Up next
The win sets up a battle between the Crimson Hawks and Mercyhurst Wednesday afternoon at IUP. The winner will be in the driver's seat for the PSAC West regular season title.
