ERIE, Pa. –
Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) had five hits and
Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) struck out a season-high 11 to help the IUP softball team to a road doubleheader sweep at Mercyhurst, winning by scores of 6-2 and 8-0 Monday afternoon.
The sweep was the fourth for the Crimson Hawks in their last five outings as they improved to 16-12 overall. They remain second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division with an 8-6 record.
Beers went 2-for-4 in the opener and 3-for-3 in game two as she extended her hitting streak to a career-best 12 games. She hit her team-best third home run of the season in the first inning of game one to give the Crimson Hawks an early 2-0 lead.
Zola struck out four batters through the first three innings as she kept the Lakers (6-27, 3-11 PSAC West) scoreless. She notched her 10th complete game of the season, scattering four hits with her 11 Ks, giving up just one earned run and no walks.
Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) finished with three hits and
Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) had two. Montgomery and Kotula each drove in a run.
Beers got things going early in game with two an RBI single in the first inning. The Crimson Hawks scored three more runs in the third with the help of a run-scoring single – along with an error – from Little. Four more runs came in the fourth with IUP knocking around five hits.
Rachel Rodriguez (Roseland, N.J./West Essex), Beers, and
Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) each had RBI base hits.
Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) pitched all five innings in the mercy rule victory, giving up just two hits with three walks, and striking out two. It was her first shutout of the season.

The Crimson Hawks return to the field and get back to divisional play Thursday with a home doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown. First pitch is at 3 p.m. The games were scheduled for Tuesday of this week, but they were moved due to impending rain.
