SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks totaled 21 hits, including eight for extra bases, as they split a crossover baseball doubleheader at Shippensburg Wednesday afternoon. The Raiders won the opener 12-7 and IUP won game two 7-3.
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) finished 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs as IUP moved its overall record to 11-23 on the season.
Joining Eisel in the hit column was
Austin Mueller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland),
Ted DeSanti (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) and
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York), each with three hits in the doubleheader. The Crimson Hawks blasted three home runs, with DeSanti, Sepic and
Matt Swartz (Sarver PA/Freeport) all going deep.
DeSanti's homer came in game two, tying things up at 1-1 in the second inning. Swartz went yard to lead off the fourth, with his round-tripper jump starting a four-run inning for the Crimson Hawks as they took a 5-1 lead. Also bringing runs in were
Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) on a sacrifice fly,
Bo Putt (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) on a triple, and
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) on a single.
Swartz added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh with an RBI single, extending IUP's lead to 7-1. Shippensburg attempted a rally in the bottom half, opening up with a solo home run. The Raiders scored one more run as reliever
Dan Roan (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) picked up the save by tossing the final three outs.
Ben Hudock (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) started and went 6.0 official innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.
IUP held a 4-0 lead in the opener before Shippensburg scored two in the third and three in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. The Crimson Hawks came back with a pair in the fifth to retake the lead, but surrendered seven runs to the Raiders in the bottom half as they took control. Eisel added an RBI single in the sixth.
