PSAC tournament bound IUP Softball drops doubleheader at UPJ in regular season finale

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The IUP softball team finished its regular season with a pair of losses as the Crimson Hawks dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Pitt-Johnstown by scores of 2-1 and 8-7. Both games came down to UPJ's final at-bat, with the nightcap decided in extra innings.

The Crimson Hawks have already locked up a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament, heading in as the No. 2 seed from the Central Division. They wrap up the regular season with a 19-15 overall record, 11-9 in the PSAC Central.

Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) had a big showing in game two, going 4-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs batted in, and scored three times. She opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning and led off the top of the seventh with a double. She would go on to score in the seventh, breaking a tie and giving IUP a 7-6 lead.

Pitt-Johnstown (13-23, 8-12 PSAC Central) came back in the bottom half, taking advantage of an error to tie the game at 7-7 and send it to extras.

UPJ set the Crimson Hawks down in order in the top of the eighth, then scored after a leadoff walk and throwing error to sweep the doubleheader.

Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) and Alaina Laverick (Clymer, Pa./Penns Manor) each had three hits in game two. Laverick hit her first career homer in the second inning to give IUP a 3-0 lead and had an RBI single in the third to make it 5-0.

The opener was quick, with the Crimson Hawks taking a 1-0 lead with a home run by Brooklyn Kotula (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) to lead off the fourth inning. That was the freshman Kotula's first career round-tripper.

Pitt-Johnstown led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to tie the game, then scored the game-winning run four batters later on a single to left. Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) took the loss, giving up just one hit to UPJ until the seventh inning.
