WEST CHESTER, Pa. – IUP women's lacrosse fell short of a postseason in the final day of the regular season, as the 23rd-ranked Crimson Hawks lost to eight-ranked West Chester 20-8 Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks end 2018 with a 9-6 overall record and a 6-6 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Coming into the day, IUP and Bloomsburg were tied for the sixth and final PSAC tournament spot with 6-5 league records. Bloomsburg owned the tiebreaker with an 11-9 head-to-head win a week ago, so the Crimson Hawks needed an upset win over undefeated West Chester combined with a Bloomsburg loss to Gannon.
Bloomsburg was upset by Gannon (4-10, 3-9) by a score of 12-10, but got the postseason berth due to the tiebreaker.
This marks the first time since 2011 that IUP has missed the postseason, ending a streak of seven straight years.
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and
Riley Greenleaf (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield) each scored three goals to lead the scoring for IUP.
Kelly Shields (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) dished out three assists.
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) continued her dominance at the draw, picking up 12 draw controls.
West Chester (17-0, 12-0) grabbed an early 4-1 lead, but IUP came back to tie the game with scores by Greenleaf,
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point), and
Bri Chavis (Sykesville,Md./Century).
The Golden Rams took a 9-6 lead into halftime, then opened up the second half with six straight goals to take control at 15-6. Burrows and Greenleaf added man-up and man-down goals the rest of the way.
