Crimson Hawks split chilly doubleheader at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) hit a two-run home run and Colin Claus (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) picked up the win on the mound as IUP baseball defeated Gannon 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. Temperatures in Erie topped out at 40 degrees with heavy winds.

Calliari's shot highlighted a six-run sixth inning as the Crimson Hawks rebounded from a late 3-0 deficit. Nate Dickey (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) knocked in a pair with a run-scoring single and later tied the game at 3-3 when Ted DeSanti (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) doubled to right. After an RBI since by Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge), Calliari lit the fireworks with a homer over the fence in left field.

Claus went six innings in the start, striking out four while scattering five hits and giving up three earned runs. Dan Roan (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) entered in the seventh and picked up his first save of the season.

Gannon rebounded with a 15-6 win in game two, scoring 10 runs between the third and fourth innings. The Crimson Hawks are now 6-16 overall and 3-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. Gannon is 16-10 and 6-4.

IUP opened up the scoring in the first inning with a two-run homer by Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) followed by a run-scoring single by Dickey.

Dickey had another RBI single in the third gave IUP a 4-0 lead before Gannon opened the gates in the bottom half. Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) made it a 10-6 game in the fifth inning with a two-run single.

Dickey finished the doubleheader 3-6 with a double and four RBI. Sepic went 4-8 with that homer and three runs scored and DeSanti had a pair of doubles.
