SURPRISE, Ariz. – The 2017-18 season for IUP women's tennis came to an end Tuesday afternoon as the No. 39 Crimson Hawks lost to No. 7 Northeastern State 5-1 in the NCAA Division II Championships round of 16.
IUP wraps up its season as the back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and Atlantic Region champions. The Crimson Hawks finish with a 20-6 overall record and advanced to their eighth straight NCAA round of 16.
RESULTS
The Crimson Hawks' win was a big one at the top doubles spot, as
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) defeated No. 22 Mayra Jovic and Karla Tomaic 9-8 (8-5).
It was Petercakova and von Agris' second win of the year over a ranked opponent as the two finish with a 22-3 (.880) record.
In singles play, four IUP players took their Northeastern State counterparts to three sets. The River Hawks (20-4) earned one three set victory and a two set victory that went into a pair of tiebreakers. Petercakova and von Agris were each in the third set when the match ended, with their opponents ranked sixth and 43rd in the nation, respectively.
The careers of two of the best players in program history come to a close
The loss ends the careers of Petercakova and von Agris, arguably two of the best players in program history. IUP's only four-time first team All-PSAC west selection, Petercakova won 165 combined matches despite playing just two full seasons. Von Agris is the program's all-time leader with 209 combined wins, 110 doubles wins, and 99 singles wins.
