The weekend at a glance
IUP women's volleyball (0-4, 0-0 PSAC) hosts the Quality Inn Crimson Hawk Invitational this weekend, with Roberts Wesleyan, Holy Family, Lake Erie, and West Liberty set to compete. There will be a total of 10 matches spread out over two days at two locations on the IUP campus – the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex (KCAC) and the Memorial Field House.
The Crimson Hawks are coming off a tough start to their 2018 schedule as they played top competition at last weekend's Cougar Classic at Cal State San Marcos, including a pair of top 10 teams.
Notes
>> The Crimson Hawks lost four matches last weekend by 3-0 scores, but showed progress throughout the weekend and played well against No. 8 Nebraska-Kearney and No. 6 Lewis
>> Senior libero
Jess Marut was named to the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team, totaling 54 digs with an average of 4.50 digs per set
>> Marut also moved into second place at IUP in career digs over the weekend, passing Sarah Rosenberry (2001-04). She now has 1,789 and trails all-time leader Emily Pany (2007-10) who totaled 2,670
>> Freshman middle blocker
Kylie Osborn was the Crimson Hawks' main source of offense last weekend, leading the team with 34 kills and 3.09 kills per set. She had a weekend-high of 11 kills and a .375 hitting percentage against No. 6 Lewis
>> Sophomore setter
Dominica Niccolai earned four starts and had 72 assists (6.00/set) last weekend. Freshman
Danielle Dirkman saw the majority of playing time against Cal State Dominguez Hills, finishing with 16 assists
>> The Crimson Hawks were picked to finish third in the PSAC Southwest as the league announced its preseason coaches' polls two weeks ago. IUP received two of the 18 possible first place votes.
