ERIE, Pa. – Junior
Katya Minchenkova advanced to the second round of the top singles bracket as the IUP women's tennis team competed on the first day of the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region Championships Saturday.
Minchenkova, the third seed in the A singles bracket, defeated Lois Page of Slippery Rock 6-4, 7-6 (4) to move on.
SATURDAY RESULTS
She was one of three Crimson Hawks in the A bracket to move onto the second round during Saturday play.
Sophomore
Julia Newman defeated Kayla Frost of Mercyhurst 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-5 and freshman
Laura Dunarova blew past West Liberty's Anita Ponti 6-0, 6-1.
In the B bracket, junior
Mariana Valenzuela advanced with a three-set, 6-0, 1-6, 10-3 win over West Chester's Shannon Nixon.
In the B doubles bracket, Valenzuela and teammate
Maria Magraner won a pair of matches Saturday to advance to the semifinals. They opened with an 8-6 win over Charleston's Lopez-Saucedo and Simon, and then defeated West Liberty's Aguduelo and Wagner 8-3.
It was the first of three days of competition as Mercyhurst University is serving as the host. The remainder of the first round, as well as additional rounds, will continue Sunday.
