ERIE, Pa. – Junior
Mariana Valenzuela and sophomore
Maria Magraner won the B doubles title at the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region Championships Sunday.
The duo won a pair of matches on the second day of competition after advancing to the semifinals with two victories Saturday.
They opened with an 8-3 win over West Chester's Nixon and von der Heyde, and then cruised to an 8-3 victory in the title match over Garcia and Bygrave of Bluefield State.
Valenzuela also advanced to the championship match of the B singles bracket, eventually falling in three sets. Her Sunday run included three wins, including victories of 6-2, 6-4 over Meggan Williams of Charleston, a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ainora Pastor, and a 6-2, 6-2 win over Naomi Jahr of Mercyhurst.
She fell to Athina Tsagkaraki of Mercyhurst in the title match by scores of 5-7, 6-1, 10-6.
Sophomore
Julia Newman advanced the furthest in the A singles bracket for the Crimson Hawks, eventually falling in the semifinals Sunday. She opened the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tatiana Batalla of Edinboro, and then advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Viola Lugmayr of Slippery Rock.
Newman lost to Charleston's Katie Swann 6-0, 6-3.
