SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - For the second straight game the IUP women's soccer team faced an undefeated opponent, and for the second straight game the Crimson Hawks (4-1, 3-1 PSAC) prevailed by a single goal to knock their opponent from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Senior
Kallie Conte scored the lone goal of the match in the 32nd minute heading the ball in from six yards out following an expertly delivered corner kick by
Nikki Bowman.Â
Conte's goal was one of several chances that the forward created on the day as Shippensburg back line struggled to cope with the speed of IUP's forwards throughout the 90 minutes.
While the Crimson Hawks would eventually outshoot the Raiders 17-14, much of the first half was dominated by Shippensburg, with IUP looking to hit back on the counter. However, after having gotten the lead going into halftime IUP came out in much more dominant fashion in the second half creating several excellent scoring opportunities. The Crimson Hawks came closest to doubling their lead in the 56th minute with a header that hit the crossbar bar, and in the 61st minute when Conte again beat the Raiders goalkeeper on a corner only to see her shot cleared off of the line by a Shippensburg defender.
Despite failing to capitalize on these and other chances, the IUP defense was able to hold the Shippensburg offense in check as the game progressed, helping to secure the shutout victory for the Crimsons Hawks.
Up next
The Crimson Hawks return home for a midweek clash with Seton Hill (3-1, 2-1 PSAC). Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m at the South Campus Field.
