INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women's soccer team (3-4-0, 2-4-0 PSAC West) lost by a score of 3-0 to the visiting Seton Hill Griffins (4-4-0, 4-2-0 PSAC) on Wednesday afternoon at the South Campus Field. The Crimson Hawks fell behind midway through the first half, before the Griffins added two goals in the second half to steal three points away from home.
How it Happened
>> For most of the first half neither side was really able to create any serious chances to trouble their opponents. The Crimson Hawks and Griffins combined for only seven shots in the first 28 minutes.
>> The sweltering conditions in which the game was played may have had an effect on the match, as a stoppage for a hydration break was required in both the first and second half of Wednesday's game.
>> It was just after this break in the first half that the Griffins managed to open the scoring. A long pass down IUP's left hand side found Alyssa Neast behind the IUP defense and in on a breakaway. The Crimson Hawks briefly looked to have dodged a bullet when Neast's shot hit the far post, but Griffins forward Katie Kimmich was fortunately placed to tap the rebound into the empty net and give Seton Hill the lead.
>> The Crimson Hawks would suffer more misfortune at the beginning of the second half. Just seconds after the restart the Griffins won a corner kick, with the ensuing service ricocheting around the IUP box before eventually rebounding off of an IUP defender into the IUP net for an own goal.
>> With a two goal lead in hand the Griffins seemed content to concede possession to IUP, choosing to sit back in a more defensive shape as the Crimson Hawks sent wave after wave of attack in search of a route back into the match.
>> In all likelihood the Crimson Hawks would have found that way back into the game if not for the stellar play of Seton Hill goalkeeper Elyza Pilatowski.
>> On three separate occasions Pilatowski made a fantastic save to deny IUP forward
Mahogany Willis one on one.
>> When Willis finally did manage to beat Pilatwoski the crossbar came to the goalkeepers' rescue to deny IUP a goal.
>> Seton Hill would put the game out of IUP's reach in the 86
th minute thanks to a long range strike on the counter attack from Neast.
>> The third goal with less then five minutes left to play ensured that the visiting side would leave Indiana with the win.
Game Notes
>> The Crimson Hawks offense was shutout for the second time this year in the loss.
>> The Crimson Hawks out shot the Griffins 17-12 in the match, doubling their opponents efforts on goal in the second half 10-5.
>> Forward
Mahogany Willis led the Crimson Hawks with nine shots in the game, seven of which were on goal.
>> Seton Hill became the first team this season to defeat the Crimson Hawks at home.
>> IUP goalkeeper
Madeline Smakulski made eight saves in the match.
