Minchenkova and Huerta advance to doubles semifinals on first day of PSAC Championships

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – IUP's two singles entries and its doubles team each advanced in their respective brackets on the first day of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tennis Championships Saturday at Bloomsburg University.

The doubles team of Katya Minchenkova and Idoia Huerta won two matches to advance to the semifinals, while Minchenkova and Joanna Stralka each won their first round singles matches to move on.

Minchenkova and Huerta opened Saturday with an easy 8-0 win over Shepherd's Ally Frushour and Isabella Mascari. They advanced to the semis with a 9-8 (2) win over Kaelyn Zak and Jenna Bailey of Seton Hill.

They'll face Millersville's Esperanza Contador and Julia Wallace in Sunday's semifinals.

In the singles bracket, Minchenkova defeated Isabella Mascara of Shepherd 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round. Stalka moved on with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Shippensburg's Paige Simons.

The Crimson Hawks are looking for their first individual PSAC title since Luise von Agris and Jarka Petercakova won the 2016 doubles championship.
