BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – IUP freshman
Joanna Stralka won three times to advance to the singles title match as the second day of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tennis Individual Championships Sunday at Bloomsburg University.
Stralka will square off against Slippery Rock's Viola Lugmayr for the championship Monday at 12:30 p.m.
After winning her first round match yesterday, she continued Sunday with a pair of wins over Mercyhurst players. Stralka defeated Athina Tsagkaraki 6-3, 6-4 and followed that with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Nadja Ostojic to move onto the semifinals.
In that round she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Millersville's Esperanza Contador.
Stralka is looking to become IUP's second individual singles PSAC champion.
In other singles bracket action, senior
Katya Minchenkova advanced to the quarterfinals before a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Lugmayr. Minchenkova won her first match of the day, a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Seton Hill's Ana Salazar.
In the doubles bracket, Minchenkova and
Idoia Huerta finished as the PSAC finalists after falling to Lugmayr and Lois Page of The Rock 9-8 (7) in the championship. Minchenkova and Huerta won their semifinal match 8-1 over Millersville's Contador and Julie Wallace.
It was the second straight year Minchenkova played for a conference title as she finished as the singles finalist in 2018.
