SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Freshmen
Nicole Peterson and
Lizzie Virgin combined for 34 kills while classmate
Leah Henderson dished out 43 assists as IUP women's volleyball swept Slippery Rock in three sets Friday night at Morrow Field House.
Peterson finished with 18 kills on 32 attacks for a season-best .469 hitting percentage and Virgin went for 16 kills and had a .312 hitting percentage.
The duo helped the Crimson Hawks hit a season-high .301 as a team with 53 kills and just 16 errors on 123 total attacks.
IUP won by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 26-24 to improve to 6-15 overall and 5-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
In each of the first two sets the Crimson Hawks were forced to bounce back from early deficits. In the first they used a 7-1 run to break open a comfortable lead and in the second they went on 8-2 run to gain the advantage over The Rock.
IUP jumped out to an early lead in the third set and held onto it until SRU tied it at 19-19. The Rock later scored three straight points out of a timeout to go on top 24-23. IUP returned the favor with a kill by
Jessica Ignace, an ace by
Kylie Osborn, and a solo block by
Jasmine Raudys.
Raudys added eight kills and three total blocks.

The Crimson Hawks head to Clarion Saturday for a match against their former division rivals. The Golden Eagles are 15-9 overall and 7-5 in the conference. Game time is 1 p.m.
