Jeff Allen’s strong start lifts IUP Baseball over Le Moyne, Crimson Hawks split doubleheader

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Jeff Allen had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings before giving up a homerun in the fifth as IUP Baseball split a doubleheader with Le Moyne, Friday morning at Ting Park.
 
The Crimson Hawks defeated the Dolphins 3-1 in the second game of the doubleheader after falling 6-5 in the first game.
 
Allen improved to 2-0 in his second start of the season. He tossed 5.2 innings, allowing a homerun while striking out seven and issuing three walks. This marked the second outing that Allen has pitched 5.0 innings or greater while fanning seven batters. In his two starts, he has allowed a combined two earned runs over 10.2 innings (1.69 ERA) with 14 strikeouts.
 
IUP pitchers of Allen, Mike Klingensmith and Brian Albert held Le Moyne to just one hit. Klingensmith (1.0 IP) recorded his second scoreless relief outing and Albert (0.1 IP) earned the save.
 
In the second game, Luke Hollander got the IUP offense started in the third inning with a double, followed by a single from Austin Vigliotti. Chris Eisel hit a double, driving in the only run of the inning. The Crimson Hawks went up 3-0 in the fifth inning with a two-run single by Colin Williams.
 
In the first game, IUP was down 2-0 heading into the third inning before Williams hit an RBI triple to get the Crimson Hawks on the board. Matt Swartz increased IUP's lead with a two-run homerun. The Dolphins tied the game in the fourth inning and hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to take the first game 6-5.
 
Colin Claus suffered the loss in the first game, tossing 6.2 innings and fanning eight batters.
 
Up Next
The Crimson Hawks finish the weekend with one nine-inning game against Saint Anselm tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Ting Park.
