Crimson Hawks open spring tennis season with 5-2 win over West Virginia Wesleyan

HARMARVILLE, Pa. – The IUP women's tennis team started off the spring portion of their schedule the same way they finished the fall, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan 5-2 at the Alpha Club & Fitness of Pittsburgh Sunday night.

It was the second dual match of 2018-19 for the Crimson Hawks, and their first of the spring, as they opened indoors against the Mountain East Conference opponent.

IUP won the doubles point with a pair of victories at the first and second spots. Katya Minchenkova and Thais Andreotti got the call at No. 1 and posted a 6-0 victory while Julia Newman and Mariana Valenzuela won 6-1 at No. 2.

The Crimson Hawks were forced to play shorthanded in their opener and because of injury gave up the No. 3 and the clean sweep.

That injury gave the Bobcats a win at the sixth singles spot by default. They would also pick up a win at the fifth spot for their only two points of the day.

Andreotti won the Crimson Hawks' first singles point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. Newman followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 while Minchenkova went a little extra at No. 1 with a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) victory.

Valenzuela closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4.

Up next
The Crimson Hawks return in two weeks when they play Division III Denison on the road in Granville, Ohio. That match is scheduled for Sunday, February 17.
