IUP Women’s Basketball defeats Kutztown to win sixth PSAC Championship

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior guard Carolyn Appleby scored 26 points to help lead the Crimson Hawks to a big second half rally and the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Basketball Championship with a 72-57 win over Kutztown Sunday at the Keystone Arena.
 
It's the sixth conference championship for IUP and the second in the last three years under head coach Tom McConnell. With the IUP men's basketball team also winning their conference crown, it marks the first time since 1987 (Millersville) that a PSAC school won both basketball titles in the same season.
 
Appleby was named the PSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player for the second time in her career. She scored 39 points on 13-of-20 shooting and 11-of-13 from the foul line while dishing out eight assists.
 
Including Wednesday's quarterfinals, Appleby averaged 22.3 points, shot 23-of-38 (.605) from the field including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, averaged 4.0 assists and had four steals.
 
With the win the Crimson Hawks clinched an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Championships. The NCAA will announce itscomplete 2019 field of 64 during their selection show Sunday at 10 p.m.
