HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – It was a successful start for the IUP women's tennis team on their spring break trip as the Crimson Hawks defeated Chowan 6-1 Monday evening.
The win ended a two-match losing streak for the Crimson Hawks, who are now have a 3-2 overall record.
They took advantage of an undermanned Chowan squad that immediately gave up the third doubles spot with just five roster players. IUP took the doubles point with a win at the two spot, as
Mariana Valenzuela and
Julia Newman came out on top by a score of 6-1.
The Crimson Hawks took a 2-0 lead with a Chowan forfeit at six singles. They followed with three more singles wins at the five, four and three spots.
Maria Magraner started with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win,
Thais Andreotti followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, and
Laura Dunarova picked up the third with a 6-1, 6-2 score.
Katya Minchenkova scored IUP's sixth and final point rallying for an impressive 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 10-5 three-set victory over Chowan's Cynthia Carrier.

This is the first of four matches for the Crimson Hawks at the Spring Tennis Fest. They have a day off before getting back to action Wednesday against Missouri-St. Louis (2-2) at 8 a.m.
