WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Crimson Hawks scored the first five points Thursday and cruised to a 5-2 win at West Liberty. The win was the second straight for IUP which evened its record at 5-5 on the year.
It was also the first match of the year against a regionally-ranked team from the Atlantic.
The win over West Liberty (8-4) opened with a sweep of doubles as the Crimson Hawks posted three easy victories.
Julia Newman and
Mariana Valenzuela picked up the first win with a 6-1 decision at the two spot, followed by a 6-2 win by
Katya Minchenkova and
Thais Andreotti at one and another 6-2 win at three from
Maria Magraner and
Laura Dunarova.
Magraner had the first singles win of the afternoon, giving IUP a 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the six spot.
Three more singles wins followed as the Crimson Hawks clinched the match. Dunarova won 6-4, 6-0 at three, followed by a 6-4, 6-1 win by Newman at two and a 6-1, 7-5 win by Minchenkova at the top spot.
Both of West Liberty's wins – at the four and five spots – went to three sets, with Andreotti and Valenzuela each coming up short.

The Crimson Hawks look to extend their win streak as they get back to divisional play with a home match against Slippery Rock Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Maple Street Courts. SRU is 8-4 this year and is coming off a 7-0 win over West Liberty.
