WILMINGTON, Del. –
Katya Minchenkova and
Julia Newman each posted singles wins over regionally-ranked opponents to lead IUP women's tennis to a 5-2 win over Wilmington (Del.) Saturday afternoon.
Minchenkova and Newman's wins came over top-15 players from the East Region as the Crimson Hawks broke a four-match losing streak with a win over the region's fifth ranked team.
Minchenkova's win was a three-setter over Begona Gomar at the No. 1 spot by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 12-10. Newman backed her up with a relatively easy 6-1, 6-2 win over Anushka Sathe at No. 2.
The Crimson Hawks won the top four singles spots, with
Thais Andreotti and
Mariana Valenzuela moving up in the lineup for the second straight match to earn victories. Andreotti won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 and Valenzuela 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4.
In doubles, Minchenkova and Andreotti paired for a 6-4 win at No. 1 while the Newman/Valenzuela team picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2. Wilmington's top doubles pair is ranked seventh in the East.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 7-9 overall while Wilmington fell to 10-8.
