Zola’s no-hitter, Beers’ walk-off highlight IUP Softball Senior Day sweep of Clarion

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP senior Lauren Zola tossed her first career no-hitter and Kaitlyn Beers hit a 3-run walk-off home run in a 10-0 mercy rule game one victory to highlight a doubleheader sweep of Clarion on Senior Day at Ruth Podbielski Field.

Zola struck out six batters in the six-inning complete game victory. She just missed out on a perfect game with a hit batter in the fifth inning, putting Clarion batters down 1-2-3 in every other inning.

This marks the end of a highly successful week for Zola, who went 3-0 with two complete games, a shutout, a 1.84 earned run average and 18 strikeouts in 19.0 innings.

It's the first no-hitter by an IUP pitcher since Kelly King tossed two during the 2012 season.

Zola's win ended with a 3-run homer to center field by Beers to end the game early with the mercy rule. It was Beers' second home run of the game, also hitting a solo shot in the third inning to give IUP a 3-0 lead.

The Crimson Hawks scored in fifth of the six innings, with RBI's coming from Renee Wall, Brooklyn Kotula, Jenna Rhue and Rachel Rodriguez.

IUP went on to win game two 12-7 with Rodriguez going 3-for-3 with four runs batted in.

The Crimson Hawks dug a hole with Clarion plating three runs in the first inning. Rodriguez had an RBI single in the second and drove in two more runs with a double in the third to tie the game at 3-3.

After two more runs by the Golden Eagles (0-35, 0-12) in the top of the fourth, IUP took the lead with four runs in the bottom half then added five in the sixth to open the floodgates.

The Crimson Hawks totaled 15 hits in game two, with Kassie Kesneck and Wall each tallying three base knocks. Cassidy Graham picked up the win in relief.

The PSAC race
With the wins, the Crimson Hawks took over sole possession of second place in the PSAC Central standings with an 8-4 league mark. They are currently one game behind Bloomsburg (9-3) and in front of third place Lock Haven (6-4).

Up next
The Crimson Hawks host Slippery Rock in a non-divisional doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Podbielski Field before getting back to PSAC Central play next weekend.
