IUP Softball ends season with doubleheader split with Pitt-Johnstown

INDIANA, Pa. – Sophomore pitcher Brooklyn Kotula tossed a complete game shutout in a 4-0 victory as the Crimson Hawks split a regular season finale doubleheader with Pitt-Johnstown Sunday at Podbielski Field.

Kotula scattered six hits, struck out three and walked two in seven full innings in the game two victory. It was her eighth complete game and third shutout of the season.

The Crimson Hawks scored the only run they needed in the second inning with Sara Hull singling home Kaitlyn Beers after Beers doubled. IUP scored three more times in the third inning with RBI hits from Rachel Rodriguez and Jenna Rhue and a sacrifice fly from Renee Wall.

Kotula set the Mountain Cats (19-19, 9-11) down in order in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

IUP had nine hits in the game with Kassie Kesneck and Rodriguez both going 2-for-3.

Pitt-Johnstown rallied to win the opening game by a score of 4-3. That loss for the Crimson Hawks knocked them out of contention for a spot in this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships in Quakertown.

IUP held a 2-0 lead through six with runs in the second and fourth innings. UPJ struck in the top of the seventh with four runs on two hits and one IUP error to take the lead. The Crimson Hawks scored once in the bottom half on an RBI single by Kesneck but stranded the game-winning on base as UPJ secured the comeback win.

IUP wraps up its season with a 15-27-1 overall record and a 10-9 mark in PSAC Central Division play.

The top three teams in each of the PSAC's three divisions earn berths to the conference tournament. Bloomsburg (30-15, 15-5) already won the Central Division regular season title. Lock Haven (26-16, 12-6) and Mansfield (17-12, 11-6) clinched the other two spots this weekend.
