IUP Women’s Lacrosse comeback falls short in 16-14 loss to Seton Hill in PSAC quarterfinals

INDIANA, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks outscored Seton Hill 8-5 in the second half but their postseason comeback fell a couple goals short in a 16-14 loss in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships Tuesday at Miller Stadium.

Down 11-6 at halftime, IUP slowly chipped away at its deficit and made it a three-goal game at 14-11 on a goal by Chloe Borland with 13:27 to play.

Seton Hill, however, answered with two goals just 20 seconds apart to get its lead back to five with just over 10 minutes left.

The Crimson Hawks put together one final push, as Shannon Hartigan took over and scored three times in the final 8:37. Hartigan's third goal didn't come until 52 seconds remaining and Seton Hill picked up the ensuing draw control as the IUP rally ended.

Hartigan finished with eight points, scoring five goals on six shots while adding three assists.

Borland and Ally Burrows each had two goals and an assist as six different Crimson Hawks combined to score the team's 14 goals.

The Griffins (11-7) owned IUP on the draw 20-11, including a plus-8 margin in the first half alone.

Seton Hill also outshot the Crimson Hawks 43-29 and had an 18-11 advantage in ground balls.

IUP got out to a 2-1 lead just over seven minutes into the game before the Griffins went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-2 lead nine minutes later.

Burrows and Hartigan helped IUP score three of the next four goals to cut the Seton Hill lead to three, but the Griffins answered with a 3-1 run over the last 4:27 of the half to take their 11-6 lead to the break.

The Crimson Hawks end their season with a 10-7 record under first year head coach and 2016 alum Brenna Gallagher. She's the first coach in program history to make the postseason in their first season at IUP.
