OBERLIN, Ohio – Five Crimson Hawks earned singles wins as they opened play at the Oberlin College Invitational Friday afternoon. It's the first action of the 2019 fall season for IUP.
IUP went 5-3 in Friday singles matches in the round robin event, with
Joanna Stralka,
Idoia Huerta,
Maria Magraner,
Thais Andreotti and
Mariana Valenzuela each picking up wins.
The freshman Stralka picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Slippery Rock's Lois Page, a two-time All-PSAC selection a season ago.
Magraner also won in two sets, defeating Sofia Khairutdinova 6-1, 6-0. IUP's three other wins came in three sets, including Huerta rallying to defeat Katarina Raszum 1-6, 6-4, 10-2. Andreotti picked up a 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 win and Valenzuela won 6-2, 6-7 (1), 10-6.
The Crimson Hawks split their four doubles matches Friday.
Katya Minchenkova and Huerta along with the team of Magraner and Andreotti each won by a score of 8-4.
