EDINBORO, Pa. – Senior guard
Malik Miller scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half as the seventh-ranked IUP men's basketball team cruised to an 88-53 win over Edinboro Wednesday night at the McComb Fieldhouse.
The Crimson Hawks shot 50.0 percent in the first half and made seven 3-pointers while turning the ball over just three times in the second half, posting their fifth straight victory. IUP improved to 14-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play.
IUP used a 12-2 run to gain early separation over the Fighting Scots (5-9, 2-8 PSAC) and stretched its lead to 14 points before the third media timeout.
Miller knocked down 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and later added a couple of dunks and another trey as IUP took its biggest lead of the first half at 41-24 right before the break.
The lead reached 21 early in the second half on a 3-pointer by
Chucky Humphries. The Crimson Hawks cruised the rest of the way, using a 15-2 run to reach the 80 points and a 30-point lead with over three minutes to play.
The IUP defense limited Edinboro to just 27.3 percent shooting (18-of-66), the lowest by a Crimson Hawks opponent this season. IUP also owned a 52-36 edge on the glass and forced Edinboro into 14 turnovers.
Who stood out
Miller hit four 3-pointers on the night and added five rebounds and three assists to his game-high 22 points. It was his fifth 20-point game of the season.
Freshman forward
Ethan Porterfield posted his first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds with two blocks in just 25 minutes.
Armoni Foster added 13 points and
Shawndale Jones scored 11 points off the bench.
Notes
The Crimson Hawks entered the game ranked No. 7 in the NABC Top 25 and No. 6 in the D2SIDA Media Top 25 polls … With Pitt-Johnstown's loss to Mercyhurst, the Crimson Hawks are now alone in first place in the PSAC West standings … The 35-point margin is IUP's second largest of the season.
