GREENSBURG, Pa. – The IUP women's tennis team made its return to the court for the 2020 spring season, but the Crimson Hawks fell to Denison 4-3 at the Greensburg Racquet Club Sunday.
Denison, the 25th-ranked squad in Division III, took the doubles point by sweeping the three matches.
Katya Minchenkova and
Idoia Huerta had the closest match at No. 1, falling to Alex Cash and Hannah Cianciola 7-6 (8-6).
Mariana Valenzuela and
Julia Newman lost 6-2 at No. 2 while
Thais Andreotti and
Maria Magraner fell 7-5 at No. 3.
Denison grabbed the first three singles decisions to clinch the match victory, with Andreotti, Newman and Valenzuela falling at Nos. 3, 4 and 6, respectively. Newman was one of four Hawks to go three sets, losing 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 12-10.
Huerta picked up the first IUP win at No. 2, rallying for a 5-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. Minchenkova followed at No. 1 with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 win, while Dunarova made it three straight with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2) win at No. 5.
