GLENVILLE, W.Va. – IUP softball freshmen
Haleigh Zimmerman and
Anna Ferrucci provided late-inning clutch with two extra base hits for a pair of walk-off wins for the Crimson Hawks Sunday at Sue Morris Field at Glenville State.
Zimmerman hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh to give IUP a 4-3 win over Alderson Broaddus in the early game, while Ferrucci smacked a double to the left center gap against Glenville State for a 5-4 extra inning victory.
The wins give the Crimson Hawks a 3-1 record coming home after a successful season-opening weekend in West Virginia.
IUP had six extra base knocks in the win over Alderson Broaddus, including a solo homer by
Renee Wall in the first inning. RBI doubles by
Faith Jones in the second and
Rachel Rodriguez in the third gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead before AB tied the game in the sixth. Zimmerman then led off the bottom of the seventh with the game-winner.
After five scoreless innings in game two, Glenville State put up four in the top of the sixth. Wall opened IUP's scoring with her second homer of the day – and third of the weekend – followed by RBI hits by
Shayanne Kimmel and Zimmerman to send the game to extras. With one down in the eighth, Ferrucci found the gap in left center to bring around Rodriguez for the win.
Ashley Renzi and
Hope Jones picked up the wins in the circle for the Crimson Hawks. Both tossed complete games, with Renzi striking out two while scattering seven hits in game one. Jones followed that with eight strikeouts and just one walk with four hits in game two.
