INDIANA, Pa. - Four Crimson Hawks scored in double-figures and 11 reached the scoring column as the IUP women's basketball team defeated Mount Aloysius 101-35 Wednesday morning at the Kovalchick Complex.
A total of 1,507 fans watched the Crimson Hawks post one of the top scoring performances in program history. Children from local elementary/middle schools including Blairsville, Rivera Valley, Saltsburg, Cambria Heights, Greater Johnstown, Indiana, Leechburg, North Star and Westmont, as well as home schoolers, took part in the seventh annual Education Day Game for the program.
The 101 points is tied for the 11th most in single game program history and the fourth 100-point effort of the
Tom McConnell era. IUP scored 36 points in the first quarter alone, the second highest in program history. The 66-point margin of victory if the fifth-best mark and the highest point total since the Hawks defeated Geneva by 72 (125-53) in the Education Day Game of 2017.
IUP was hot from the start, going on a 32-0 run over a 6:44 span in the first quarter. The Hawks made seven straight from the field early in the quarter and finished the first 10 minutes by connecting on 16-22 shots, including 3-6 from 3-point range.
The Hawks shot 53.1 percent from the floor for the game, forced 29 turnovers, and outrebounded Mount Aloysius by 30 (50-20).
Defensively, IUP gave up single digit points in three of the four quarters. The Hawks gave up just three points in the fourth, tied for the second fewest in program history.
Who stood out
Senior guard
Justina Mascaro and freshman guard
Kiera Baughman each scored a game-high 16 points. Mascaro finished 6-9 from the field with three 3-poitners and added four assists and four steals in 19 minutes. Baughman went 6-10 from the floor and 4-5 from the foul line with three assists and two steals in 13 minutes.
Sophomore guard
Maria Cerro scored a career-high 12 points in 22 minutes. She went 5-9 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers, adding four assists, two steals and a block.
Junior guard
Rajah Fink came off the bench to score 12 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting in just 15 minutes.
Notes
IUP is now 3-0 on the year after winning both of its games in the PSAC/CIAA Challenge last weekend ... The Crimson Hawks are ranked ninth in the D2SIDA Media Top 25, announced Tuesday ... IUP is receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches Top 25 preseason poll.
