Jones' 37 points lead No. 18 Hawks past Bowie State on the road

BOWIE, Md. - Senior guard Shawndale Jones exploded for 37 points for the 18th-ranked Crimson Hawks, who held off a strong second half effort by Bowie State to score a 90-83 road victory Friday night at the AC Jordan Arena. 

Jones shot 16-28 from the floor and 4-5 from the foul line in the most dominant offensive effort of his collegiate career. the 37 points is the most by an IUP player since Brandon Norfleet netted 38 against Seton Hill on Jan. 20, 2016. It's tied for the 16th most points in program history and one of nine 37-point efforts by an IUP player. 

Senior Tommy Demogerontas also stood out, posting career-highs of 23 points and 15 rebounds. He shot 8-10 from the field, including 4-4 from 3-point range. It was hit second double-double of the year and his fourth in eight games played at IUP.

How it happened
The Crimson Hawks improved to 4-0 in their first road test of the season. They shot 51.6 percent (33-64) from the field, including 8-16 rom 3-point range. IUP turned the ball over 15 times but out-rebounded the Bulldogs 46-to-24. 

The Hawks quickly built a 15-3 less than five minutes into the night, but Bowie battled back to make it a 21-16 game at the midway point. IUP responded with a 14-3 run to take a 16-point lead but turnovers allowed the Bulldogs to again rally to cut their deficit to 38-36 at the half. 

Jones did most of his work in the second half, scoring 29 points on 12-21 shooting in 20 minutes. His output was well-timed, as Bowie State (0-3) shot over 60 percent from the floor and made six 3-pointers. The Bulldogs grabbed two early second half leads, including 47-46 at teh 16:29 mark, but Jones and the Hawks caught fire. They used a 21-7 run to take a 77-61 lead with under nine minutes to play and held off a late surge the for 90-83 win.

IUP entered the game ranked No. 18 in the NABC Coaches and No. 5 in the D2SIDA Media Top 25 polls ... This was IUP's ninth straight regular season non-conference win ... This was IUP's third straight 90-point effort ... The Hawks are averaging 95.3 points per game, the best mark through four games in the Joe Lombardi era.

Up next
The Crimson Hawks are off for a week until they host the IUP Thanksgiving Classic at the Kovalchick Complex next weekend. IUP will play Virginia State Saturday and Salem Sunday.
