INDIANA, Pa. – The 24th-ranked IUP women's tennis team fell to Carnegie Mellon 5-2 in its 2021 home opener Sunday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.
Four different Crimson Hawks saw the win column, including Idoia Huerta and Lydia Vlachou, who paired for a dominant 6-1 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Carnegie Mellon (6-0) rallied to take the remaining two matches to pick up the doubles point. Karolin Kirchtag and Katy Graydon lost 6-2 at No. 2 and Laura Dunarova and Abby Jones were edged 7-5 at No. 3.
In singles play, Graydon grabbed the victory at No. 3 by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Dunarova won at No. 6 by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Matches at the top two spots went to three sets before eventually won by CMU. Kirchtag lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot and Huerta fell 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 2.
This was the second match of the weekend for the Crimson Hawks, who recently returned to action after five weeks off due to various COVID-19 concerns.
