CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The IUP women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to Charleston in a battle of the top two programs in the Atlantic Region, losing 4-3 Saturday afternoon.
Charleston entered the weekend at the top of the latest ITA regional rankings and improved to 11-2 overall. IUP came in at No. 2 and dropped to 7-3 on the season, breaking its six-match win streak.
IUP opened the contest by earning the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. Most notable came at the top spot, as
Idoia Huerta and
Lydia Vlachou defeated Julia Lif and Prinkle Singh, the 22nd-ranked pairing in Division II, by a score of 6-4. Also winning was
Karolin Kirchtag and
Katy Graydon 6-3 at No. 2, and
Laura Dunarova and
Abby Jones 6-3 at No. 3.
The Hawks picked up two wins in singles play from Huerta and Graydon. Huerta defeated Katie Swann 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and Graydon rallied to take down Alexiann Drouin 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Four win streaks were extended during today's match. Graydon went to nine straight singles wins while Huerta's singles streak is now at three. In doubles, both Huerta/Vlachou and Kirchtag/Graydon have won six straight.
