INDIANA, Pa. – Laura Dunarova used an exciting three-set singles victory to give the IUP women's tennis team a 4-3 match win over visiting West Virginia State Saturday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.
Dunarova defeated Maya Haidari 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot, breaking a 3-3 tie to give IUP an important regional victory in the final action of the day.
This is the third time in the last 12 matches, dating back to last season, that the match decision came down to Dunarova's court with her getting the win in each instance.
The win was the fourth straight for the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 5-2 overall. West Virginia State, which is ranked No. 4 in the ITA Atlantic Region rankings, is now 3-6.
IUP earned the all-important doubles point with a three-match sweep.
Idoia Huerta and
Lydia Vlachou started things off with a 6-1 win at the top spot with
Karolin Kirchtag and
Katy Graydon winning 6-2 at No. 2. Dunarova and
Abby Jones wrapped it up with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Singles play went back-and-forth, with the Yellow Jackets earning the first point at the sixth spot to tie the match at 1-1. IUP's wins first came from Graydon at No. 3 by a score of 6-3, 7-5 and then Vlachou at No. 4 by a score of 6-2, 7-6.

This was the first of three straight home matches for the Crimson Hawks over the next four days. They'll be in action again Tuesday against Mercyhurst (3-5, 2-1) in a match that will go a long way in deciding the division.
