INDIANA, Pa. – Idoia Huerta made it official with a victory at the second singles spot, clinching a 5-2 victory for IUP women's tennis over visiting Mercyhurst Tuesday at Maple Street Courts.
The win was the fifth straight for the streaking Crimson Hawks, who improved to 6-2 overall and remain undefeated in the PSAC West with a 4-0 division record.
Tuesday's match was a battle of two regionally-ranked squads as IUP entered ranked second in the Atlantic Region while Mercyhurst was sixth.
The Hawks took a quick doubles point by winning the top two spots. Huerta teamed with
Lydia Vlachou for a 6-2 victory at one while
Karolin Kirchtag and
Katy Graydon won 6-3 at two.
The Crimson Hawks took a 3-0 lead by taking the first two in singles play, with Vlachou winning 6-1, 1-0 at four and Kirchtag taking the top spot by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
The Lakers gained a point at the sixth spot before Huerta scored the match-clinching win at two by rallying to dominate her opponent 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. Graydon wrapped up the match by winning 6-0, 4-6, 10-6 at three.
