Late marker secures tie for IUP women

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP women's soccer netted the equalizer in the 87th minute, leveling the score at one and securing a tie against Slippery Rock on South Campus Field.

Kristen Finnerty finished off a rebound attempt, pushing IUP (3-4-5, 2-4-5) level late in the second half. Slippery Rock (4-2-8, 3-2-7) opened the scoring with Libby Zacharyasz tucking a chance into the cage in the 19th minute, later holding large chunks of possession over the final 45 minutes.

SRU held a 15-12 edge in shots on the day, while IUP goalkeeper Vanessa Berlin collected six saves. Wednesday marked the second tie of the season between IUP and Slippery Rock, with both teams scoring twice in a conference matchup back on September 7.

"I thought we started off the game well in the first 30 minutes," IUP head coach Noreen Herlihy said. "Slippery Rock had large parts of the second half where they dominated the ball, but then it was back and forth."

Cassidy Zandier and Aislinn Meaney ripped chances over the opening six minutes, with Emma Yoder reaching low for a save on the second attempt. Meaney posted a team-high four shots with three coming on frame in the contest.

The Rock followed with several chances of their own over the next few minutes in the first half. Berlin made her first stop, coming on Kayla Swope in the ninth minute, before stopping Zarharyasz in the 19th minute. Zarharyasz stuck with the play, tracking down the ball along the left post before ripping the first tally of the contest.

Meaney and Rachel Kalkbrenner looked for an IUP response in the opening half as SRU went into the break ahead 1-0. The Rock titled play in their favor in the second half, owning the ball and placing IUP back on its heels.

The Crimson Hawks eventually broke through with Finnerty racing in to bury a rebound opportunity in the 87th minute.

"I want to credit our players for not quitting and netting the equalizer in good fashion," Herlihy continued.

Berlin and SRU goalie Emma Yoder each made one more save as time ticked away in the second half.
