EDINBORO, Pa. – IUP women's volleyball fell, 3-1, on the road to Edinboro on Saturday afternoon at the McComb Fieldhouse.
Coming off an emotional win last night, IUP (16-5, 6-4) looked flat at times and struggled to hold off a determined Edinboro (16-6, 6-4) squad. With the win, Edinboro moved into a tie with IUP in the PSAC West standings in third place overall.
Grace Magapora posted 12 kills on a .357 hitting percentage for IUP on Saturday, while
Brooke Little and
Nicole Peterson had nine kills each.
Lauren Valentic had six kills and five block assists and
Bailey Flowerdew recorded 17 digs.
Bella Burrelli rifled down a match-high 17 kills for Edinboro with Erica Sharp adding 12 kills and three block assists.
The Fighting Scots jumped in front 9-3 in the first set and IUP could not close the gap. Edinboro widened its margin to 18-7 and a final push from IUP, including kills from
Brooke Little and Magapora, was not enough.
Magapora continued her strong offensive push with three kills in an early 6-0 IUP surge in set two. Peterson placed down a kill, working the lead to 11-5 before the Fighting Scots narrowed the gap. A 5-1 run ballooned the IUP lead to 22-15 and a Fighting Scot service error closed the frame.
IUP benefited from consecutive attack errors, lifting the visitors to a 5-3 lead in the third set. The Fighting Scots battled back, pushing their advantage to 14-11 and later 19-14.
Caroline Walsh posted back-to-back kills off sets from
Leah Henderson, but the Fighting Scots recorded the final two points of the frame, emerging with a 25-18 set victory.
IUP placed down service aces from
Leah Henderson and Peterson in the fourth set, part of an outburst that pushed IUP ahead 12-10. The Fighting Scots responded with a timely run of their own, moving back in front at 17-13. The Crimson Hawks could not close the gap as Edinboro held on for the set and match victory.
Edinboro has won five of the previous seven meetings with IUP, dating back to 2017. With 41 assists, Henderson surpassed the 40-assist mark for the 10th time this season.
