CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The IUP men's basketball team finished out the exhibition slate with a 89-55 loss to Miami on Sunday at the Watsco Center.
The Crimson Hawks placed three in double figures, shooting 30.0% from the field.
Shawndale Jones posted a team-high 15 points with seven rebounds, while
Tomiwa Sulaiman and
Dave Morris notched 14 points each.
KJ Rhodes had three assists and
Ethan Porterfield pulled down six rebounds.
Miami got off to a quick start and did not look back, shooting 54.4% from the floor. The Hurricanes are coming off an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, picked fourth in the ACC Preseason Poll behind powerhouses North Carolina, Duke and Virginia.
Isaiah Wong and Jordan Miller guided the Hurricanes with 19 points each.
Miami jumped out to a 13-0 run at the start of the contest before the Crimson Hawks started to settle in. IUP countered with an 8-0 spurt, capped by a three-point basket from Jones at 14:54. Another three from Jones, again assisted by
KJ Rhodes, trimmed the IUP deficit to 20-16 in the opening half.
The Crimson Hawks stayed within single digits for much of the opening half. Miami ultimately expanded its advantage to 40-29 at the intermission. Jones and Morris recorded 11 points each in the first half, while Jones pulled in six rebounds.
Tomiwa Sulaiman began to get into a groove in the second half, posting eight points with an athletic block in an impressive stretch. Miami used another quick scoring run, jumping ahead 58-39 with just under 13 minutes left in the frame.
Sulaiman continued his hot shooting in the second half while Miami continued expanding its lead under the 10-minute mark. The Hurricanes remained in front comfortably as the second half ticked away.
